Family dinners are a special tradition shared by loved ones. They allow us to have a better sense of belonging, greater family bond, and also often lead to healthier dietary habits.

H-E-B wants to encourage families to eat together more often as they try new healthy (and family friendly) recipes. To do this, they are kicking off the Ready, Set, Cook Challenge on March 12 that will challenge customers to track their recipes at home to accumulate points. If they collect enough points to complete the challenge, they’ll be entered to win free groceries for a year!

Healthy Eating Tips from H-E-B’s experts:

Regular home-cooked family meals tend to allow for healthier dietary habits to be developed by including:

  • Greater intake of fruits and vegetables
  • Reduced intake of fried food and soda
  • Reduced intake of saturated and trans fat acids
  • Greater intake of fiber

    We eat baked chicken (dipped in stolen Chick-Fil-A sauce), grilled tilapia with steamed veggies, or chef salads with turkey/ham.  We all enjoy snacking on baby carrots, yogurt and tons of fruit.  But then the rest of the time we eat beef tacos/bean burritos, tons of spaghetti and even more pizza.  Lol!

    Love this Taco Soup recipe (http://familyeguide.com/2011/taco-soup/). You can make the all-canned version, and keep the ingredients in the pantry for a last minute meal when unexpected guests drop in… or make it with fresh meat.  Have the kids dump everything in the pot – they feel like they’ve cooked the whole meal and are much more likely to eat it (both of my kids and most of their friends LOVE this hearty soup)!

    Out of order- fav meal is goulash.  Toss whatever ya got into it and hope it turns out well.  For dessert have strawberries/cleaned and hulled dipped in yogurt.  Frozen!

    My favorite recipe to make is our green smoothie.  You can add any kid of fruit and veggies. OUrs usually consist of 8 oz orange juice. 1-2 bananas. 1-2 c blueberries and half a bag of spinach. Blend it all together. Yummy! It is my favorite breakfast.

    How about an all natural pie crust that is healthy. Take 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup sugar. 1/2 wheat flour and 1 cup quick oats. Soften butter, cream into butter, ad flour, mix and then add oats and stir. Spray nonstick vege spray into 9 inch pie plate. Take clean hands and smash into pie plate and up the sides. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Fill pie crust with prepared pie filling of choice. Bake 30 mintes at 350 degrees. Remove, cool and eat.

    I like to make ordinary ground beef dinners–spaghetti sauces, casseroles, etc–healthier by sibstituting part of the volume of meat with smashed black beans.  Huge increase of fiber, still lots of protein, still great taste and texture of ground beef.  [Thank You HEB for not compromising on the quality of ground beef!]

    One of our favorites is Broccoli, Ham & Cheese Casserole.  I use greek yogurt rather than mayo.  Once cooked, mix everything together and bake it.  SUPER easy and so good!
